Happy Friday Coaches! Officially March Madness! High School and College all heading to that amazing time of year where “survive and advance” is a way of life.
This week’s social media share is a great Ted Talk by Amy Purdy! Adversity hit her like a ton of bricks, her 9 minute share is worth a watch!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.
-Jim Valvano
Today’s basketball share includes a quick hitter vs zone, thoughts on improving your game management/special situations for the offseason, and a video that outlines my coaching philosophy.
Let’s Go!
Zone Defenses, when run effectively, can cause teams trouble on the offensive end. My philosophy of attacking a zone focuses on a conceptual attack that attacks the short corner, midpost/high post, and attacking the zone with pass or dribble penetration. I like to supplement our zone attack with a few quick hitters for end of clock, end of quarter, or ATO situations. Here’s a favorite:
In your postseason analysis, I think a key and often overlooked factor is how you and your team are attacking the end of quarter, end of half, shot clock situations and ATO situations that happen multiple times each game.
A. Are you getting 2 for 1’s when the shot clock is around 45 seconds. A quick attack, quick shot to get that extra possession.
B. Focusing on ending quarters and halves with effective offense and defense. The momentum that is created by a strong finish often leads to success coming out of the quarter and half that gives you positive momentum.
C. After Time Out: How effective was your team coming out of a time out. A 1.0 PPP is our goal.
For many teams the postseason run is over, the season complete, and coaches have a time to decompress from the long days in the gym, road trips, and the grind of a basketball season. I like to use the offseason to go over my Coaching Philosophy and make tweaks and adjustments based on how I’m seeing the game, what I have learned, and any adjustments I need to make to my vision.
