Happy Friday Coaches! A Sweet 16 appearance for our team at CCC last week in the NWAC’s and tournament championships in all conferences going on this week! GOTTA LOVE IT! A big congratulations to coaching friend Michael Meek, whose University of Portland Women’s team won another WCC Tournament Championship beating Gonzaga. This after losing to the Zags just two weeks earlier by 50! Watch his teams play! You’ll always learn something!
This week’s coaching share is a NEW PROJECT by Coach Matt Hackenberg. He’s calling it the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ZONE OFFENSE. It’s a new product set to launch on his store next week. It comes with:
60 pages of detailed writing on zone concepts
A zone offense drill progression
One hour zone offense “Chalk Talk”
A massive categorized zone offense playbook
A film reel to watch many of actions executed

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Go the extra mile. It’s never crowded there.”- Dr. Wayne D. Dyer
This week’s basketball share includes some ideas for summer camp/youth basketball skill development, teaching shooting, and a preview of installing our transition system with our Cal Stars EYBL 17’s this weekend.
Let’s Go!
1. Summer basketball camps are right around the corner! During my time at Oregon City HS I was able to work with the very best Camp Coach ever, and arguably the best coach in Oregon HS History, Brad Smith. Camps were a well oiled machine. A combination of fun, fundamentals, and competition. Here are two really good drills I use at camps and clinics to get players moving and work on footwork and ballhandling vs pressure/contact.
Teaching shooting and the fundamentals of shooting during the offseason was a huge priority for me. Helping players get better RYTHYM, balance, and the “jump off two land on two” HOP SHOOTING technique installed up and down was a top priority for our program from grades 5-12.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
a. Weapon on the Catch
b. Ball in the air feet in the air
c. Jump off 2 land on 2
d. Be SPRINGY
e. SWEEP your feet forward
f. SNAP your wrist through your shot
g. HAND under the ball at release
Doc Scheppler is my biggest influence. Here are some videos to look for teaching the HOP method. Coach Craig Campbell at Clovis West in Fresno is another brilliant teacher of the HOP method.
AAU Season starts this weekend. I’m extremely lucky to work with the best in the business, Kelly Sopak and the Cal Stars Program. Training camp is coming up and I’m excited to work with some of the very best players in the country.
PRIORITY 1 for us this weekend is getting in our FULL COURT transition game. My philosophy is that the game is played up and down, and that we must first teach how to go from one end to another in a manner that maximizes our opportunity to SCORE and get STOPS.
Here’s a link to my TRANSITION BUILD UP and all the drills I use to install and build our fastbreak/transition system.
