This week’s shout out goes to Coach Michael Jagacki! Coach puts out a ton of great stuff on defense and breaks down teams and players on his X account! With most of our online feeds sending us OFFENSIVE strategy, skills, or sets, Coach Jagacki stands out with this great work on the defensive side of the ball! LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Great defense is about disrupting the other team’s flow and taking them out of their comfort zone.”
-Becky Hammon
This week’s basketball share includes an “inside-outside” finishing series for your team skill development, a great PIVOT drill to build footwork, and it’s PHILOSOPHY update time!
Let’s Go!!
Summer is camp and clinic time! When teaching different finishes one of my favorite setups with large groups is the inside-outside series. Each player has a ball with no more than 4-5 players per hoop to maximize repetitions. INSIDE refers to a dribble on the inside of the cones, OUTSIDE refers to a dribble that starts on the outside of the cones with different finishing moves. It’s an easy setup to teach players and can be a great station for CAMP!
INSIDE: Over the top of the help, show and go, goofy foot, inside hand, Rondo
OUTSIDE: Floater (one and two foot), reverse, inside hand, Rondo
I’ve added BARKLEY’S and JORDAN’S (dribble post ups and fake dribble out comeback.)
Getting players comfortable with their feet can be a tough task. Players often burp up bad shots over outstretched arms, waste an offensive rebound with a bad put back, and especially on post ups, fail to take advantage of opportunities to score using simple footwork. Here’s a great drill to teach your players to use pivot to avoid the defense, fake the defense, and score the basketball.
ADD constraints: must pivot twice, three times, pivot middle first, pivot baseline first, attack from different angles, throw off the backboard to make it a put back drill. So many great options, I love it for all players, not just the BIGS!
July is almost here!! Time to start getting all my notes and ideas from the spring and revisit my past season updates to add/substract/delete/update/review my Coaching Philosophy!! I suggest all coaches do the same before next season. “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail,” is the famous quote. Alway Be Prepared!!
