Happy Friday Coaches! Stretch run for the Cougs! 3 games to go! Late in the year I’m always reminded of the great quote:
“Win with humility, lose with grace, and do both with dignity.”
– A Wise Person
This time of year some teams are making their season long dreams come true and other teams are having their dreams end. Always do both with class and dignity. I know early in my career I wasn’t great at this.
Social Media share of the week is the link to James Clear and his Twitter X Account! If you haven’t read Atomic Habits I highly recommend it! Great read for coaches, parents, students, and anyone looking to improve their lives! I loved it!
Today’s basketball share includes my strategies for building your offensive playbook this offseason, two actions in transition I really like, and a 3 v 3 continuous game that’s perfect for your open gyms or AAU preseason work.
Let’s Go!
Each team and coach is unique in how they approach the game. Slow tempo, fast break, motion vs set plays, etc. For us, running an uptempo attack with dribble drive and morphing it each year into a style that fits our current team has been our core offensive philosophy. Each season there are a few sub categories I use to supplement our transition DDM attack.
A. TRANSITION (7 seconds or less attack + Actions: My #1 every season
B. False Motions
C. Backdoors
D. Post ups
E. Isolations
F. Ballscreens
G. Flare Actions
H. Chase-Get Actions
I. Special Situations: Need a 3, need a quick 2 + SLOB’s and BOB’s
J. Zone attack
Understanding your own system and style of play and THEN adapting that to your personnel is a key part of creating a SYSTEM of play that fits your players. Every category may not fit your team, it may be too much or not enough. There may be some MUST HAVES and some MIGHT HAVES in your thinking. Discernment is a KEY aspect of coaching. Do what works for your team.
A favorite action we love in transition is the WAVE action. We’ve added the SNAP BACK option to create a drive for our trailer. Both actions are diagrammed below with film. WAVE + SNAP BACK WAVE are diagrammed below:
3. AAU Season is right around the corner. Getting your team up and running quickly is a key. I liken it to the NBA where you have 5-7 practices then start playing games. One of my favorite drills to build our transition attack quickly is our 3 v 3 Transition Drill. Taken from Doc Scheppler at Pinewood HS it’s a simple continuous game that can have added constraints or rules to create points of emphasis. Example: + 4 for a paint touch kick out 3-pointer made, + 2 for offensive rebounds, - 2 for a turnover etc. You get what you emphasize so choose constraints that fit your philosophy
